Why Dog Walks Are Important

Most modern day dogs simply don’t get the opportunities to do what their breed instincts tell them to do. (herding dogs need to be herding, mouser dogs need to hunt, etc) Additionally, it’s rare that a dog exercises on their own, and your backyard likely doesn’t provide the variety of sensory stimulation most dogs need to ward off boredom. Dogs need walks for both exercise and mental stimulation!

Dogs are creatures of habit, by providing them with a consistent daily routine they learn what is expected of them. If your dog exhibits destructive behaviours such as getting in to the trash, digging, or chewing items that are not their toys; it is a sign your dog is bored. Additionally constant barking or whining or following you around everywhere you go are additional signs your dog may be bored. By providing your dog with mental stimulation you help them become better dogs and help keep them out of trouble. There is a saying, "A tired dog, is a happy dog" and walks are a simple, effective way to help provide this stimulation.

Just like with humans, obesity has become an epidemic among our beloved dogs with approximately 54% of dogs being overweight or obese. What is more shocking, is 90% of those dogs owners didn't recognize their dogs weighed more than they should. By providing your pooch with exercise and a proper diet you can all but eliminate any extra weight which can have severe health consequences for your four-legged companion. By providing your dog with a proper diet and exercise you extend your four-legged friends life by years, and by walking them daily you help increase the bond you share.

Obese dogs can have long term health problems
